Position Overview:
The Team Lead – Site Services is a senior field leadership role responsible for end-to-end execution of industrial automation and control system projects at client sites. The role spans pre-commissioning through final handover, covering PLC/SCADA systems, Substation Automation, industrial networking, IIoT and OT Cybersecurity Systems. The incumbent leads a team of site engineers and technicians, serves as the primary technical escalation point on site, and ensures projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and to specification.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, plan, and allocate commissioning work across site engineers for concurrent project deployments.
- Plan commissioning schedules, resource mobilisation, and site readiness activities in coordination with Project Managers.
- Supervise on-site activities: panel installation, cable laying, terminations, and equipment setup.
- Lead I/O wiring verification and loop checks between PLCs and field devices.
- Review, download, configure, and validate PLC and HMI/SCADA programs as per project specifications.
- Lead execution of interlock testing and logic validation as per FDS; function as senior escalation point for PLC/SCADA troubleshooting on site.
- Configure and test communication protocols: Modbus RTU/TCP, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, MQTT, OPC UA.
- Lead Substation Automation System (SAS) commissioning activities including configuration and testing of IEDs, RTUs, and bay controllers per IEC 61850 standards.
- Configure and test IEC 104 communication links between substation RTUs/gateways and SCADA/control centres.
- Commission and validate industrial network infrastructure: managed Ethernet switches, VLANs, ring topologies (HSR/PRP/RSTP), and fiber optic backbones.
- Enforce OT Cybersecurity controls on site in alignment with IEC 62443 – including network segmentation, DMZ architecture, firewall rules, access control, patch management, and endpoint protection.
- Coordinate with cybersecurity team for deployment and validation of OT security tools (Claroty, Cisco ISE, Palo Alto, Acronis, or equivalent).
- Coordinate with the Engineering team for resolution of site-raised design issues and Technical Queries (TQs).
- Lead FAT and SAT execution; oversee punch-list closure and commissioning documentation sign-off.
- Manage Control System AMC activities: system inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs.
- Ensure all commissioning documentation is prepared, reviewed, and handed over: pre-commissioning checklists, SAT reports, site work plans, and as-built markups.
- Enforce compliance with safety regulations, permit-to-work (PTW) procedures, and quality standards on site.
- Mentor and guide junior automation engineers and site technicians; conduct performance reviews and recommend training actions.
- Act as the primary client interface on site for technical discussions, progress updates, and issue resolution.
Must Have Requirements:
- Degree in Electrical & Electronics, Electronics & Instrumentation, Electronics & Communication, Mechatronics, or related field.
- 6+ years of experience in commissioning of industrial automation/control systems, with 2+ years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
- Proficiency in configuring, programming, and troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems.
- Hands-on experience with Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Schneider Electric, or similar platforms.
- Experience in Process Industries shall be given preference.
- Strong understanding of field instrument integration (pressure, level, flow, temperature) with PLC/SCADA systems.
- Proficiency in PLC programming languages: Ladder Logic (LD), Structured Text (ST), and Function Block Diagram (FBD).
- Experience with industrial communication protocols: Modbus RTU/TCP, Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP.
- Hands-on experience with IEC 61850 engineering tools for IED configuration.
- Experience commissioning IEC 104 telecontrol links between RTUs/gateways and SCADA systems.
- Practical knowledge of industrial network commissioning: managed switches, VLAN configuration, HSR/PRP/RSTP redundancy, and fiber optic communication.
- Ability to read and interpret GA drawings, wiring diagrams, Loop Drawings, SLDs, and P&IDs.
- Experience in leading FAT/SAT execution and commissioning documentation sign-off.
- Working knowledge of hazardous area classification (ATEX/IECEx) and safety practices on O&G sites.
- Willingness to travel extensively and work at remote project locations.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, documentation, and client communication skills.
Good to Have Requirements:
- Knowledge of integrating PLCs with MCCs, PCCs, and electrical switchgear systems.
- Familiarity with IIoT protocols: MQTT, OPC UA, and REST APIs.
- Knowledge of communication media: Ethernet, RS232, RS485, and Fiber Optics.
- Exposure to OT Cybersecurity frameworks (IEC 62443) with practical experience in network segmentation, firewall configuration, and secure remote access implementation.
- Familiarity with OT security tools: Claroty, Nozomi, Palo Alto, Cisco ISE, or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of additional telecontrol/SCADA protocols: DNP3, IEC 101, or IEC 103.
- Exposure to Functional Safety (IEC 61511/SIL) on O&G commissioning projects.
Natural Talent & Personality Fit:
Beyond skills and experience, the right candidate is someone who is naturally wired for this role:
- Stays calm and thinks clearly under site pressure – failed loop checks, comm faults, or client escalations don’t derail them.
- Takes personal ownership of project outcomes; spots problems early and acts without being prompted.
- Manages up to clients and down to technicians with equal ease, fairness, and respect.
- Has strong engineering instinct – can walk onto an unfamiliar panel and quickly form a working hypothesis.
- Communicates with precision; translates complex site issues into clear briefings, TQs, and client reports.
- Leads by presence and competence, not just designation – earns respect through conduct and expertise.
- Genuinely curious about how integrated systems work – reads beyond the immediate scope, asks the right questions.
- Comfortable working in remote, multicultural, and demanding site environments for extended periods.
