KSEB Peppara SHEP

Scope

Supply, installation, testing and commission of PLC-SCADA system for an automatic Turbine Governor Control and to modernize the power plant.

Background

KSEB hydroelectric power plant is equipped with a generator unit which has a capacity of 3 MW. The power output generated is 11 kV at 50 Hz and is locally connected to the 33kV Vithura substation.

As the existing PLC system had failed, the generator was running on a relay logic based manual control system.

The speed governing the hydraulic system and the Brushless Excitation system- Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) and Protection system were also functioning in manual mode.

System Description: Automatic Turbine Governor

Due to the limitations in turbine control and machine protection systems, the existing system was replaced with an entirely new, highly reliable and rugged automation system. The whole Hydroelectric Generation system is now controlled and monitored by a centralized PLC with Local Human – Machine Interface (HMI) and SCADA.

The following are now integated with the PLC for machine protection and control.

  • Cooling Water Distribution System
  • Hydraulic Speed Governor System
  • Transformer AVR

The following are incorporated as part of the Control and Protection System inside the control panel:

  • Generator Protection Relay
  • Ground Fault Protection Relay
  • Synchronous Motors

Using this system, the KSEB was able to overhaul its plant to a state–of-the-art facility.
